Acknowledgments: The author appreciates the long hours and hard work so generously provided by staff members of the American College of Physicians, particularly Diane M. McCabe and Susan Perry. Ms. McCabe and Ms. Perry contributed to the project by corresponding with committee members, nominators of books, and publishers. They also maintained and updated relevant files, collated and assembled the final bibliography, and checked the accuracy of citations. The author is also grateful for the time, energy, and ideas provided by the members of the Library for Internists VIII Core Committee and by members of the ACP Publication Policy Committee. The greatest debt of all of us who worked on the project is to the many physicians and librarians who took the time and effort to nominate books and provide meaningful answers on the survey forms. Without their help, the bibliography could not have been assembled. Note: Not all database listings and CD-ROM products include pricing information. As the dissemination of information takes on many new levels of technology and continues to evolve, the American College of Physicians (ACP) has again compiled a “Library” of reference materials to aid the internist in his or her quest to maintain a satisfactory level of medical knowledge. Although some materials may remain the same, new information sources are constantly becoming available, and Informatics has virtually exploded with the rapidly evolving computer technology that surrounds us in our professional environments. Students and librarians are likewise confronted with an unrelenting deluge of medical information, and we hope this list of publications and educational programs will assist them as well.

We have expanded the list of reference materials applicable to personal and library computers. A list of selected readings in the realm of the humanities will be published in subsequent issues of Annals and is intended to broaden the educational horizons of the reader and to provide a welcome diversion from the world of medical science.

    Selection of Books

The list of books in this edition of the Library for Internists was selected by a broad cast of physicians who are recognized as experts in their specialties. We also solicited recommendations from practicing general internists to broaden the spectrum of reading materials. The ACP membership served as the major resource for nominations of contributing individuals and their selections of publications and educational materials. The College's prestigious reputation throughout organized medicine and its broad-based educational foundation made it relatively easy to request nominations from its well-read membership. The College's officers, Board of Regents, Board of Governors (both past and present), Council of Associates, and the many education-based committees and subcommittees were included in the selection process. Nominations were also requested from other medical societies and from editorial boards of selected medical journals.
