The 10th National Forum on Quality Improvement in Health Care
Frank Davidoff, MD, Editor
1 October 1998 | Volume 129 Issue 7 | Page 585
Although all clinicians understand at some level that the present quality of medical care leaves much to be desired, many react to the words "quality improvement" with a mixture of healthy skepticism and mild nausea. The Institute for Healthcare Improvement (IHI), founded and directed by Dr. Donald M. Berwick, has been a leader in convincing many skeptics, physician and nonphysician alike, that the quality of care can be improved in ways that are both idealistic and pragmatic. The series of articles, "Physicians as Leaders," that appeared in Annals earlier this year [1] explained many of the core working principles of this group's successful efforts.
As occasions for sharing experience, generating new ideas, and rededication to the task of improving medical care quality, IHI's annual National Forum has been important in furthering its work. A tentative 300 participants attended the first Forum, but 3000 are expected at this year's meeting, testimony to increasing national and international recognition of its value. Annals takes pride in serving as an organizational sponsor of IHI's upcoming 10th National Forum, which will be held on 6-9 December 1998 in Orlando, Florida. Readers interested in obtaining information about the meeting or about IHI and its other programs should contact IHI Customer Registration at 617-754-4800 or visit the IHI World Wide Web site at http://www.ihi.org.
