Robert Peter Gale, Christopher A. Juttner, and Philippe Henon; eds. 175 pages. New York: Cambridge University Press; 1994. $59.95.
Gale is well known for his attempts to save the victims of the Chernobyl radiation disaster using bone marrow transplantation; because this book is about blood autografts rather than bone marrow autografts, Chernobyl is not mentioned. The vocabulary of blood stem cell transplants is so specialized that a glossary of 20 abbreviations precede the text: In this book, CSF is colony-stimulating factor and FAB is the French-British classification system for leukemia. According to the editors, this book is the first comprehensive review of blood stem cell transplants. It draws on experience with acute and chronic leukemias, breast cancer, lymphomas, and myeloma and provides suggestions for future directions.
